The battle between Simeon and Morgan Park is one of the better high school games in Chicago every year. Thursday’s game took a sad turn, however.
After the game ended at Chicago State University, 17-year-old Tyrone Lawson was shot and killed outside the gymnasium. Two people were taken into custody, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The university released a statement Thursday morning saying it was "deeply saddened by the tragic shooting death."
“(Chicago Public Schools) periodically uses the university’s athletic facility to provide a neutral setting for student sporting events. This is the first such incident to occur on the campus of Chicago State University where CPS students have played many times over the last three years," the statement said.
"Additional security is provided by the university and all external partners during high school sporting events. Arrests have been made and university officials are awaiting the outcome of a full investigation to learn details about the shooting incident.”
During the postgame handshakes, a scuffle broke out between the two teams. Reporters on the scene said it ended fairly quickly, with security not letting it escalate beyond pushing and shoving. Fans attempted to join the fracas, according to tweets, but the teams were separated.
Simeon -- home of top-five recruit and Duke-commit Jabari Parker -- pulled out a 53-51 victory, but it was clearly overshadowed by the aftermath.
