Updated Top 25 (and one)

Michigan State is No. 1 in the updated Top 25 (and one), and I suspect the Spartans will be atop the AP and Coaches polls on Monday, too. They were ranked second in those polls last Monday, subsequently beat the team that was ranked No. 1 (Kentucky) on a neutral court, then remained undefeated with a win over Columbia. So this shouldn't be too complicated.

That said, I have no issue with those who might vote Louisville or Kansas No. 1.

Those two programs are reasonable options, too.

But the idea that Michigan State shouldn't be ranked No. 1 after it struggled with Columbia on Friday is stupid to me, because this is college basketball, and, in 40-minute games, even the best will struggle from time to time. And unless you're going to watch every minute of every game and adjust your ballot each time a team struggles for a half, then I don't see why you would punish Michigan State for a sloppy effort against Columbia.

Rest assured, I'll never rank teams that way.

A pattern of sloppiness?

Absolutely, I'll adjust for those ... over time.

But I'll rarely drop a team for winning games, and I'll never drop a team I have ranked No. 1 without that team taking a loss. You can write those rules down in a permanent marker. Consequently, the top of this Top 25 (and one) was easy for me because, I hope you've heard, I'm now updating these rankings every single day, and I've had Michigan State No. 1 since Wednesday. That means the Spartans will remain No. 1 here until they lose. And even though they didn't look great on Friday, they quite clearly didn't lose. So they're sitting above everybody else with a 3-0 record featuring a win over John Calipari's Wildcats.

Anyway ...
