VIDEO: Chattanooga Mocs take on Navy SEAL-like training
You might have seen how VCU undergoes something similar to this every offseason. There's a good reason why Chattanooga is doing the same.
New Chattanooga coach Will Wade is taking a few pages from Shaka Smart's book. That makes sense; Wade was hired away from VCU this past offseason to coach the Mocs, who haven't made the NCAA tournament since 2009. So Wade will be implementing a "CHAOS"-themed defensive style, similar to what Smart built at VCU with "HAVOC."
Smart has also had his program endure Navy SEAL-like offseason training as means to gear up for the preseason. Wade has done the same at his first post as head coach. The Mocs recently endured out-of-the-box physical endurance training, in addition to the natural morale boost and teamwork that's built into these activities.
"The Mocs’ athletics performance guru Greg Goldin located the perfect person to share the tenets of team building a U.S. Navy SEAL," the school notes. "Student-athletes, coaches and staff gathered together for a three-day period in the pre-dawn hours for their lessons."
The drills these players do look exhausting, but ultimately worth it. It'll be interesting to see if Chattanooga is able to become a mini VCU inside the SoCon in the next few years.
