WATCH: Horizon League favorite Oakland loses at buzzer to 20-loss Youngstown State

Youngstown State, with 20 losses on its resume, didn’t figure to have much of a chance in the Horizon League quarterfinals against No. 1 seed Oakland. But the ninth-seeded Penguins pulled off the improbable and crushed the Golden Grizzlies’ NCAA Tournament hopes in the process.

YSU drew up a slick little play for the final possession, drawing Oakland beyond the arc. The Grizzlies took the bait and left a wide-open Jon Kauffman under the basket, who scored on an uncontested layup at the buzzer for the 81-80 win.

Cameron Morse, who had 34 points in the upset win, drew all the attention when the ball was inbounded to him on the last possession. The entire Oakland team thought he’d be the one to take the shot, so it was a heads-up play for Morse to find his man wide open for the win. Now Oakland (24-8) will await a likely bid to the NIT as the regular-season champ from the Horizon.

Youngstown State (13-20) faces the winner of No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky and No. 5 seed Wright State in the semifinals on Monday.
