WATCH: Kentucky does charity work for children in the Bahamas
No matter how UK plays, this will be the most positive thing to happen for the Wildcats on their Bahamian trip.
The most powerful thing John Calipari can do for his players is put them in this position: helping people.
The video above is uplifting. The Wildcats are currently on an exhbition tour of games in the Bahamas. A beautiful getaway and growing experience for Calipari's team, but there's also some down time -- and time to give back.
On Wednesday the players and coaches gave back to the Bahamian community, offering up an event to promote and benefit the Samaritan's Feet charity at the New Birth Church in Nassau, Bahamas. College basketball's been great about raising awareness in this regard over the past 10 years. Around the world, millions struggle to even put shoes on their feet.
"It’s humbling," sophomore Kentucky guard Andrew Harrison says in the video above. "It actually makes you want to drop a couple tears because you see all these kids and then you think about what we complain about every day. It just makes you think about what you have and what you’ve been blessed with."
Momentum has grown to where current and former players and coaches have traveled all over the world to help put shoes on feet. Kentucky did just that on Wednesday. Players washed children's feet and donned them with new socks and shoes. From Calipari's official website:
"You know these guys, and many of them come from different backgrounds,” said Manny Ohonme, the CEO and co-founder of Samaritan’s Feet. “To see people like them say, how can I actually participate and help and inspire these kids and lift them up to do great things, I think this is one of the best days I have ever seen.”
It was Ohonme who once had nothing, but who was given a pair of shoes when he was 9 years old, living in Nigeria. That act of kindness eventually led to millions receiving aid and shoes around the world. Pretty powerful.
