Arizona State staffer on leave after felony domestic assault charges

Arizona State placed assistant athletic director for recruiting Sherman Morris on administrative leave after his arrest on charges of felony aggravated assault-serious physical injury and felony domestic violence-strangulation.

Morris was arrested by Chandler (Ariz.) Police on Aug. 29 for those charges and was released on bond, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chris Hegstrom told

"We have put a football staff employee on administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of the facts in the case," Arizona State athletic department spokesman Mark Brand said Thursday.

Morris allegedly left his wife with bruises on her arm, broken teeth and a laceration on her chin after an altercation in the couple's Chanlder, Ariz., home, according to a copy of the Chandler Police Report obtained by Morris allegedly choked his wife from behind and lifted her off the ground, the report states. Morris' stepson intervened, according to the report, which also states Morris punch his wife twice -- in the face and to the back of her neck/shoulder area.

Chandler Police Department spokesman Seth Tyler said th victim cannot drop the charges because a domestic violence dispute makes the state a victim.

Morris is in his first year with Arizona State after six seasons as LSU's director of player personnel. He is not a member of coach Todd Graham's coaching staff but is involved in the football program's recruiting.

His ASU bio says Morris played a prominent role in LSU's five consecutive nationally top-ranked recruiting classes, including the nation's No. 1 class in 2009. He helped identify such standouts as Morris Claiborne, Michael Brockers, Anthony Johnson, Eric Reid and Odell Beckham, according to the bio.

Before joining LSU's staff, Morris was an assistant coach at Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Fla. He is a former LSU track and field standout and won the 55-meter hurdles in the 1991 SEC championships.
