Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw has resigned, according to a statement released Monday night by the university.

"After much reflection and prayer, I have decided that a change in athletics department leadership is in Baylor University's best interest in order to promote the unity, healing and restoration that must occur in order to move forward. I have always sought to put the University's needs ahead of my own," McCaw said in a statement.

"My time at Baylor has been an incredible journey filled with some of the most remarkable people I have ever known. I am grateful to Baylor Nation for its support and dedication, and to all who have done so much to advance the athletics program."

The news of McCaw's resignation comes during a tumultuous time for Baylor. Last Thursday, the university announced coach Art Briles was being suspended with intent to terminate following a report from Pepper Hamilton detailing years of assault involving former members of the football team.

As part of those initial changes, McCaw was sanctioned and placed on probation, while president Ken Starr was reassigned to chancellor.

Earlier Monday, former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe was hired as Baylor's "acting head football coach," which the school confirmed in the early evening. McCaw is quoted in the program's release as he reportedly made the hire.

A full coaching search is expected to take place after the season.

"Jim Grobe is the right leader at this time to move Baylor University and the football program forward," said McCaw in an earlier statement. "He has successfully led two FBS programs during his career. Coach Grobe enjoys an impeccable reputation within the intercollegiate athletics community and is a man of great integrity and faith."
