BCS preview, picks: Georgia highlights the schedule again
The schedule makers did Georgia no favors to start the season. The Bulldogs play their second straight top-10 opponent.
Wow. Who did the Georgia folks anger in the scheduling department? The Bulldogs had a top-10 rated road game to start the season, followed by another top-10 opponent at home. They have another one coming in two weeks, but that's a problem for another day.
Otherwise, it's not a big week for big games. There are just a handful with potential BCS implications.
Last week, my picks were 5-2 straight up, 4-3 vs the spread. Also, I missed on my upset pick. I should have picked just about any FCS team. This week, two FCS teams are favored on the road against FBS teams. Georgia State and Massachusetts are both underdogs, to Chattanooga and Maine respectively.
South Carolina at Georgia (-3.5). Because of the loss to Clemson last week, this is an elimination game for Georgia. Lose, and their national championship hopes are gone. The loser is also in deep trouble in the SEC East race. This could be the East division title game, although I'm sure Florida will have something to say about that. Georgia win, USC-East cover.
Florida at Miami (+2.5). Florida was underwhelming last week, but the Gators are more talented and will be ready for the Canes. UF will probably have a lot of support in the stands too. Gators win and cover.
Notre Dame at Michigan (-3.5). Devin Gardner was impressive in his debut as the full-time starter at QB for the Wolverines. I also think we saw what a difference Everett Golston made for Notre Dame. The Irish D will keep them in it, but ultimately, Michigan wins (and covers).
Texas at BYU (+7.5). Texas started slow last week before dismantling New Mexico State. BYU never got over the hump at Virginia, which isn't a good sign for the Cougars. They'll be better at home, but not good enough. Texas wins and covers.
Oregon at Virginia (+22.5). The Hoos knocked off BYU last week, and these cross-country road trips can be a bear, but it looks like Oregon's offense hasn't missed a beat with a new coaching staff. It won't be quite as easy for the Ducks, but they won't have to sweat too hard. Oregon wins and covers.
Upset of the Week: Montana State (+9.5) over SMU. There probably won't be another week like last week, where eight FCS schools were winners over FBS, but the FCS No. 3 Bobcats have a good chance this week to steal some money.
