Big East divisional alignments in football could be announced this week

The Big East Conference’s divisional alignment should be announced this week pending presidential approval a conference official told Sunday night.

The divisions will be split geographically (East and West) for the soon-to-be far-flung conference according to senior associate commissioner Nick Carparelli. But because the “Big East West Division” sounds too confusing there will be other distinct names for the divisions. The announcement could come as soon as Wednesday.

The reconfigured Big East will operate as a 12-team league in 2013 and 2014. League presidents are expected to consider the issue Tuesday at a Big East meeting in Chicago.

Here’s an educated guess on the divisional breakdown for football:

Boise State

San Diego State

Central Florida

South Florida

The league continues to negotiate for a new TV deal that it hopes will assure financial stability. Estimates for a 12-team  league (to be expanded to 14 by 2015) have ranged from $70 million-$100 million per year.
