Boise State: San Diego State must be next invite to Mountain West

One of the conditions for Boise State rejoining the Mountain West was to extend an invitation to San Diego State to become a 12th member of the league before any other school. There is a deadline for such an invitation of Jan. 31, according to a "term sheet" between Boise State and the MWC obtained by the Idaho Statesman.

While it is widely speculated San Diego State will also rejoin the MWC, Boise State apparently felt strongly enough to include it as a provision in the agreement.

San Diego State is due to join the Big East on July 1. Boise State left the Big East and formally rejoined the conference on Monday. The MWC currently stands at 11 teams for 2013. According to the term sheet, the addition of a 12th team would automatically split the MWC into two divisions. The league would then stage a championship to be played at the school with the “highest BCS ranking.”

The provision specifically states the MWC “will extend an option for San Diego State University to join the MWC on terms mutually agreed between SDSU and MWC and to join or decline before offering membership to any other institution.”

San Diego State could still join the league after Jan. 31 but must be offered first before any other school before that date. The conference and school are discussing options.
