Boston College, Holy Cross to renew old rivalry in 2018, 2020
Though it won't be like it was when the two schools started playing in 1896, two old New England foes will meet again in 2018.
A classic Massachusetts football rivalry that dates back to 1896 will be renewed -- and even if it won't ever be quite the same as it was 117 years ago, the news will no doubt be welcomed by fans at both Boston College and Holy Cross.
Per the Associated Press, the Eagles and Crusaders announced Friday that the teams will play at Boston College's Alumni Stadium in both 2018 and 2020. The games will be the first between the teams since 1986.
The two Jesuit schools played 82 times before the series' dissolution following Holy Cross's move to the non-scholarship Colonial League, now known as the Patriot League. But the Patriot's decision to allow football scholarships has helped several league schools line up games against FBS schools -- in 2013 Fordham defeated Temple, and Colgate visited Air Force -- and has apparently helped smooth the way for a return of the BC-holy Cross series.
The Eagles lead the series 48-31-3, winning the last eight games in the series and 17 of its last 19.
