Carta-Samuels out, Robinette to start at QB for Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt will have to face Texas A&M without its starting quarterback as Austyn Carta-Samuels has been ruled out with the leg injury suffered vs. Georgia.
If Vanderbilt is to turn its stunning win over Georgia into a stunning winning streak at Texas A&M, it will have to do so without its starting quarterback.
James Franklin confirmed Thursday that Austyn Carta-Samuels is out indefinitely with the leg injury suffered against the Bulldogs, and backup Patton Robinette will get the start in College Station.
“Austyn is out and Patton is our starter until we feel like there is a chance where Austyn may be able to come back later in the season," Franklin said, per the Tennesseean. "Patton is the starter. Josh Grady is the backup. And that’s just for this game ... But Austyn, based on the information I have right now, is out this week and then we’ll see what the future holds.”
Robinette's performance after taking over for Carta-Samuels was encouraging, with the redshirt freshman hitting 9-of-15 for 107 yards and helping lead the comeback over the Dawgs (with a big assist to Georgia's special teams, of course). He did throw an interception.
But after Carta-Samuels won the job in spring and fall camps and hit 66 percent of his passes for better than 8.5 yards an attempt through the season's first seven games, it stil lseems unlikely the senior won't be missed as the Commodores seek to keep up with the high-flying Aggies. If Carta-Samuels cannot return this season, it would mark the end of the former Wyoming transfer's career.
If there's a silver lining, it's that giving Robinette the remainder of the season's reps will give Vandy's potential quarterback-of-the-future a brighter present in 2014. But that might be cold comfort against Johnny Football and Co. Saturday.
