Clemson football recruiting: Four-star linebacker Barrett Carter commits to Tigers
The Tigers beat Georgia, Auburn and Ohio State for the services of Carter, the No. 51 prospect in the nation
Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables has established himself as one of the top assistants in college football, and he'll have another star to work with in the future. Barrett Carter, a four-star linebacker and the No. 51-ranked prospect in the Class of 2021, committed to the Tigers over offers from several schools including Georgia, Auburn and Ohio State.
Carter, a 6-foot-1, 220-pounder from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia, is ranked the No. 5 inside linebacker and the No. 8 prospect from the state of Georgia during this recruiting cycle.
"I could visit Clemson a million times and I would have butterflies before every visit," Carter told 247Sports. "The coaching stability, how they produce talent, and how they graduate players... that all spoke volumes to me. Everyone always tells you there is something in those hills at Clemson, I can see that, I can't really explain it."
Carter has 127 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 12 sacks in two high school seasons. He drew a comparison to Miami Dolphins star Jerome Baker by Charlie Power, national writer for 247Sports. Power provided this scouting report on the newest Clemson commitment.
"Shorter linebacker but has a relatively filled out frame with long arms," Power wrote. "Could potentially top out around 240 pounds once in a college strength program. Has shown his speed by posting 40 times in the 4.5 range at college camps. Plays at one of the better high school programs in metro Atlanta and in Georgia's highest classification. Primarily plays on the outside at this point and sees success as a pass rusher off the edge and in chasing plays down in pursuit. His speed transfers over to the field, as he closes quickly and shows the ability to make some athletic plays in space. Shows good play strength and has some striking power. Is better as a blitzer and space player than as an inside, instinctual run defender at this point. Solid, not elite production as a junior, particularly from a one-way player. Projects as a multi-year starter at the Power Five level with the potential to develop into an NFL Draft pick."
Clemson currently boasts the No. 3 class in the nation for the 2021 recruiting cycle. Carter is the eighth top 100 recruit to commit to the Tigers, who have the top recruiting class in the ACC.
