Clemson QB Deshaun Watson (collarbone) shut down for spring
Early enrollee freshman Deshaun Watson suffered a broken clavicle in the Tigers' scrimmage on Monday and will be out for three weeks.
Deshaun Watson, Clemson's highly-touted early enrollee freshman quarterback, suffered a "slight crack in his collarbone" on Monday during a scrimmage and will miss the rest of spring practice, including the Tigers' spring game.
Watson, the No. 1 dual threat quarterback in the 2014 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite, has been competing with Cole Stoudt and Chad Kelly for the starting quarterback job that Tajh Boyd held for four years. According to Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, the talented freshman will not need surgery and should be back in time for summer workouts.
"This is a shame because he was having an outstanding spring," said Swinney of Watson. "Fortunately this is not a serious injury. I hate that he will miss the Spring Game. I know a lot of people were anxious to see him make his debut in Death Valley.
"But he will be fine by the time summer workouts start again in May. He does not require surgery."
Stoudt, a senior, has the most experience as the long-time backup to Boyd while Kelly, a redshirt freshman, and Watson have yet to record a college snap. However, Swinney said Monday that none of the quarterbacks has separated himself and a decision won't come until fall camp, at the earliest.
"All have had god days and had some not so good days, but it is a very competitive situation," Swinney said. "I don't see us determining a starter until August. There is no obvious front-runner."
Clemson will host its spring game on Saturday, April 12.
The Terps will wear these against Indiana on Oct. 28.
