North Carolina's 2022 recruiting class received a major boost Wednesday when four-star linebacker Sebastian Cheeks committed to the Tar Heels over Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan and Oregon in an announcement broadcast live on CBS Sports HQ. Cheeks is ranked as the No. 15 linebacker and No. 131 overall prospect in the 2022 recruiting class by the 247Sports Composite.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect is UNC's seventh four-star commitment of the 2022 class and 12th total commitment as the Tar Heels continue to fare well on the recruiting trail amid a resurgence under head coach Mack Brown. Cheeks made the most of June, jumping on the opportunity to visit his top schools once the NCAA dead period was lifted before settling on the Tar Heels.

"There was a lot that went into it, honestly," Cheeks said. "I want to play for Mack Brown. I see [co-defensive coordinator] Tommy Thigpen as like my second dad. I use the word family around them. They're everything I wanted in a school, from academics to football and just the overall social life. It was just a perfect fit for me."

247Sports recruiting analyst Allen Trieu notes that while Cheeks does need to add some size and strength, he has the athleticism to be a great fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme but can play in other schemes as well.

Explosive, athletic linebacker who has frequently played outside in a 3-4 high school. Speed off the snap allows him to shoot gaps when he is playing more inside or beat tackles around the edge. Workouts have allowed us to see quick feet and change of direction. Has not been asked to do as much in coverage that we have seen but has the athletic tools to drop if scheme calls for it. Added more offensive responsibilities as a junior and that further showed athleticism. Has to add bulk and strength. Will play physically but additional size and strength will certainly help that. Stand-up 3-4 outside linebacker is a great fit for him but athletic enough to project elsewhere in other schemes.
