College football scores, rankings, highlights: Michigan, Oregon advance as close calls and upsets abound

After debuting at No. 4 in the first batch of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, Oregon needed a late surge Saturday night at rival Washington to come away with a 26-16 victory. The Ducks fell behind 9-3 early, but then scored 21 unanswered points and held on late to stay firmly in the playoff conversation with three regular-season games and a potential Pac-12 Championship Game appearance still remaining.

Travis Dye led the Ducks with 211 yards rushing and a touchdown early in the fourth quarter for a 24-9 lead. He wasn't the only running back to carry a top-10 team to victory on Saturday night, as No. 7 Michigan got a similarly strong performance from Hassan Haskins in a 29-7 win over Indiana. Haskins rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries as the Wolverines bounced back with an emphatic victory following their crushing loss at Michigan State last week.

Michigan's performance was among the best for teams with playoff hopes on another wild day in college football. Although No. 1 Georgia cruised to a win over Missouri, No. 2 Alabama narrowly survived a feisty LSU, No. 3 Michigan State was upset at Purdue, No. 5 Ohio State won in unimpressive fashion at Nebraska and Cincinnati barely squeaked out a win against Tulsa. Additionally, No. 9 Wake Forest lost a shootout to North Carolina.

All told, the day was a reminder that plenty still remains to be sorted out among the top teams in the sport as the first week of November comes to a close.

CBS Sports was here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the day.

Tennessee survives

Final: Tennessee 45, No. 18 Kentucky 42

Crazy game goes to the Vols, even after Kentucky converted a fourth-and-24 on its final series. That was a miracle play after the Cats were hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike for Mark Stoops arguing that a facemark penalty should have been called. But, in the end, the Cats couldn't quite get to field goal range. The Vols are going to dip below 10 yards per play due to the kneeldowns at the end. But that offense was humming tonight and the Vols are 5-4 now with Georgia on deck.

Iowa survives

Final: No. 22 Iowa 17, Northwestern 12

You'll be shocked to know an interception sealed victory for Iowa just now against Northwestern. Give the Wildcats credit for battling back from a 14-0 deficit and having the ball in the final two minutes with a chance to take the lead. They win the turnover battle 3-0 tonight, and without that, they don't win the game. The offense started hot but was flat the rest of the way, even with Alex Padilla at QB.

Bama survives

Well, it wasn't pretty. In fact, it was pretty ugly. But Alabama survives for a 20-14 win over LSU, despite generating just 6 net yards on the ground. Even when you factor in the 22 yards lost on Bryce Young's sacks, it was still an abysmal effort on the ground for the Crimson Tide, who finish with just 308 total yards. Alabama may remain No. 2 just because the others around them aren't doing anything impressive, but that game does nothing to make you believe this team is better than Georgia. Barrett Sallee's recap is here and will be updated with takeaways.

Lights out on Indiana

Michigan just pulled ahead 29-7 on an 8-yard pass from Cade McNamara to Luke Schoonmaker with 13:39 remaining. A 50-yard completion to Cornelius Johnson set it up. Wins at Penn State and Maryland (neither cakewalks but should be favored in both) are all that stands between the Wolverines and a Nov. 27 showdown with Ohio State that COULD be between one-loss rivals.

Big win almost done for Boise

The Broncos' season of extremes will continue, as the Broncos will improve to 5-4 and have wins over ranked foes BYU and Fresno State on the resume following a dominant outing tonight. Boise State is up 32-7 following a 7-yard TD run by Cyrus Habibi-Likio. It's been a season of chaos for Fresno State, as well. From nearly beating Oregon, to beating UCLA, losing at Hawaii, etc. The Mountain West is a fun, competitive league and this game is further proof of its parity.

Florida getting run off the field

It's now 40-10 South Carolina late in the third quarter, and you can just assume this will be the last post about that game for the night, because it ain't really a game. The Gamecocks are dominating Florida. This isn't some fluky turnover fest or something. It's just domination. Zaquandre White has 106 yards on the ground, Kevin Harris has 83 and little-known QB Jason Brown has two TDs through the air. Will be a huge win for Shane Beamer.

Scoregon

Washington goes three-and-out on its first series of the second half, and Oregon strikes quick with a 6-play, 70-yard TD drive to make it 17-9. That drive was five Travis Dye runs and then a two-yard Anthony Brown keeper to cap it off. Ducks doing it on the ground in the rain. If the No. 4 Ducks pull away on the road on a day when No. 3 Michigan State loses and No. 2 Alabama struggles at home vs. LSU, then they could have a case for No. 2

Fireworks in UT-UK

They are trading touchdowns in Lexington, as Will Levis just led a 75-yard scoring drive after throwing a pick-six. Now 38-35 Tennessee with 1:20 left in the second quarter. Wildcats have 471 yards of offense. The only reason Tennessee has just 328 is because the pick-six robbed it of the chance to get more yards. There has been a grand total of ONE punt in this game.

Oregon up in the rain

The Ducks lead it 10-9 at halftime as the rain pours at Washington. The Huskies have just 102 yards and got on the board thanks to an interception that set up a short score and a safety. Oregon's been far from great — Anthony Brown is 6 of 15 through the air — but it did have a 76-yard scoring drive to take the lead in the second quarter. If this rain persists, expect to see a lot of running in the second half. It's really coming down.

Bulldogs trailing in second half

3Q: Boise State 16, No. 23 Fresno State 7

Fresno State is not having a great week as it faces off against Boise State, the historic class of the Mountain West. The Broncos have 227 passing yards from star QB Hank Bachmeier, while running back George Holani has 88 yards. FSU's Jake Haener threw for 157 yards, but turned it over. A loss would push Fresno State out of the top 25.

Upset alert in Tampa

HALF: South Florida 28, Houston 26

One of the most important games on Cincinnati's radar is going the wrong direction as 2-6 South Florida holds a halftime lead against UH. Bulls running back Brian Battie has a pair of 100-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns to spur the lead. If Houston loses, Cincinnati's biggest chance of a ranked game suddenly vanishes.

Gators with shocking first half

HALF: South Carolina 30, Florida 10

Dan Mullen is officially on the hot seat as Florida put together one of the most embarrassing halves in college football this season against lowly South Carolina. The Gamecocks cranked out 316 yards of total offense at the half with a third-string quarterback and held the Gators to 1.8 yards per carry. Florida has not lost by double-digits against an unranked opponent since the first year of the Mullen era.

Steady Michigan

Solid bounce-back effort from Michigan so far, as the Wolverines lead Indiana 17-7 at halftime behind 117 yards on the ground from Hassan Haskins. Donaven McCulley is 7 of 15 for 69 yards with no TDs or INTs in his second career start for IU. Wolverines would be sitting real pretty right now if they hadn't squandered a 30-14 lead against Michigan State last week. But it's not insane to suggest they could at least compete with Ohio State.

Insane stat

Kentucky leads Tennessee in time of possession 24:06-5:54 but the Vols lead 24-21 at halftime. Tennessee has scored so quickly that its defense spent nearly all of the first half on the field. It's a byproduct of Josh Heupel's system, and it's why his UCF defenses weren't great. Kentucky has 298 yards and is looking better offensively than it has…..in a while. We'll see if the Vols have enough steam in the third quarter to keep it up.

Fresno State down vs. Boise

Fresno State is on the board, but Boise State is hanging tough. This team has been incredibly up and down, but it did beat BYU when the Cougars were ranked No. 10 earlier this season. A loss for No. 23 Fresno State would be rough for Oregon, which needs its win over the Bulldogs to hold up as a quality win for resume purposes. Looks like it'll be a good second half on SEC Network.

Texas pulls Thompson

2Q: Iowa State 3, Texas 0

After a slow start to the first quarter, Texas made a quarterback change by putting in redshirt freshman Hudson Card for the elder Casey Thompson. Card started the season but was later pulled in favor of junior Thompson. Texas has lost three straight games before traveling on the road to Ames; the Cyclones boast one of the Big 12's best defenses.

Iowa rolling

Tyler Goodson has 75 yards on the ground and 16 yards receiving already, and it's early in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes have been on a precipitous fall but they're looking strong early against lowly Northwestern. Iowa is playing Alex Padilla some at QB over Spencer Petras. Interesting move as they seek some offensive life.

Washington up early

Oregon just cut it to 7-3 on a 46-yarder from Camden Lewis with 8:23 to go in the first quarter, but the Huskies struck first on this touchdown following a truly terrible interception from Anthony Brown. Linebacker Carson Bruener picked it off and nearly housed it before he got caught. One of those days where nothing is coming easy for many top-ranked folks.

Vols-Cats scoring

If you're dealing with brain drain from the defensive struggle in College Station, check out Kentucky-Tennessee. It's 14-14 now and both offenses are chugging along pretty well. 10:23 left in the second quarter and both offenses are about to hit 200 yards. Hendon Hooker has 191 yards passing on five attempts for Tennessee.

LSU getting fancy

When you're a four-touchdown underdog on the road against the nation's No. 2 team and you have a lame duck head coach, you might as well take some chances, right? LSU certainly did here, and it paid off as the ol' jump-pass fake punt goes for a first down. Quality stuff.

No. 6 Cincinnati survives Tulsa

Whatever style point Cincinnati needs to collect in order to impress the College Football Playoff committee, they're not getting. The Bearcats needed a late fumble in the end zone -- after fumbling the ball away themselves in the shadow of their own goal posts -- to escape with a 28-20 win over the Golden Hurricane. It's tough to frame the Bearcats' season in any other way other than the playoff, and in some regards that's a shame, but this team has been playing it dangerously close to the line over the past couple of weeks. And come next Tuesday when the new rankings are revealed, here's guessing the committee is going to punish them for it.

TCU completes upset over No. 12 Baylor

Michigan State wasn't the only top-25 team upset on Saturday. In its first game of the post-Gary Patterson era, TCU got a massive 30-28 victory over the Bears. Perhaps most surprisingly, the Frogs defensive front did a decent job against Baylor's vaunted rushing attack, holding the Bears to 179 yards on 36 carries. Outside of one big run from Abram Smith, Baylor just didn't have much rhythm in its ground game. A huge win for the Frogs as they try to salvage their season after their coach was fired a week ago Sunday.

Michigan State falls to Purdue

It must be the Boilermakers' year. No. 3 Michigan State is the latest to fall from the ever-shrinking list of unbeaten teams, losing to Purdue 40-29 on Saturday. In pulling off the upset, the Boilermakers defeated an opponent ranked among the top five in the AP Top 25 for the 17th time as an unranked team, the most in FBS history.

Baylor on upset alert

Start 4Q: TCU 23, Baylor 21

The No. 12 Bears trail against TCU in the fourth quarter in the Horned Frogs' first matchup without head coach Gary Patterson. With starting QB Max Duggan sidelined, TCU backup Chandler Morris has cleared 400 yards and has a passing and rushing touchdown. Baylor RB Abram Smith has 97 yards rushing, but the bulk came on two breakaway plays. TCU has the ball with a chance to go up two scores in the fourth.

Arizona wins first game

The final Power Five team in college football picked up its first win of the season as the Arizona Wildcats moved to 1-8 with a win over Cal. Running back Michael Wiley capped off a 55-yard drive with a game-winning touchdown with 2:17 remaining. Cal was missing several players due to Covid-19, but the Wildcats will celebrate any win they can get.

With Arizona's win, the last remaining winless team in college football is UNLV, which enters a road matchup against New Mexico at 0-8.

Notre Dame cruising

3Q: No. 10 Notre Dame 25, Navy 6

Notre Dame's College Football Playoff chances will appear to stay intact, as it is cruising against a Navy team that hasn't been able to slow down quarterback Jack Coan. The Wisconsin transfer has 251 yards and a touchdown, and running back Kyren Williams has punched in two more on the ground, to build the 25-6 lead. The Midshipmen have just 122 total yards early in the fourth quarter.

Sparty, yes

3Q: No. 3 Michigan State 21, Purdue 21

The Spartans haven't handled the Michigan hangover well against giant-killer Purdue, but found life in the second half on an amazing touchdown run by quarterback Payton Thorne. We have a tie ball game in the second half and Sparty has life.

Cincinnati holding steady

3Q: No. 6 Cincinnati 21, Tulsa 12

The Bearcats fell into sleep-walk mode late in the first half, but came out of the locker room firing. Desmond Ridder hit Alec Pierce for a 12-yard touchdown to cap off a four-play, 72-yard drive and go up two scores on the Golden Hurricane. The stout Bearcats secondary has held Davis Brin to just 59 yards in two-plus quarters.

TCU leading rival Baylor

HALF: TCU 16, No. 12 Baylor 14

The post-Gary Patterson era is off to a hot start as the Frogs took a two-point lead over Baylor at the half. Backup QB Chandler Morris is playing the game of his life, throwing for 246 yards and a rushing score. After a 48-yard rush by Abram Smith in the first half, the Bears – the Big 12's No. 1 rushing offense – have mustered just 44 yards on 2.8 yards per carry.
