Conference Power Rankings (Oct. 23): Big 12 depth on display during conference play

Conference Power Rankings

(previous: 1)
Top 25 Teams: 7 (both polls)
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 23-8
Nonconference record (Total): 31-8
Cumulative ATS record: 48-52-1
Recently: The SEC and Big 12 have been the strongest conferences, by far. Computers will tell you the Big 12 is stronger, but the SEC has the top two teams in the computer rankings -- and that's got to stand for something. It brings us to a stalemate, at least here after Week 8. The top half of the SEC continues to be strong, but the bottom half -- Kentucky, Auburn, Missouri, particularly -- have been underperforming.

Big 12
(previous: 3)
Top 25 Teams: AP: 4, Coaches 5
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 17-3
Nonconference record (Total): 26-3
Cumulative ATS record: 35-30-2
Recently: The status of the Big 12 in the conference landscape seems to fluctuate with the play of the Texas schools. With Texas, Texas Tech, and TCU all looking better in the last week or two, it is hard not to be impressed with the depth in the Big 12. With the exception of Kansas, any team in the league has the offense to score 50. Defense might win championships, but 50 points will give you a good shot to win on a Saturday.
Big 12 Power Rankings

(previous: 2)
Top 25 Teams: 4 (both polls)
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 17-9
Nonconference record (Total): 24-10
Cumulative ATS record: 39-44-1
Recently: Some of the mid-level Pac-12 teams have been struggling, and it's hurting the general stock of the conference. Washington has lost three straight, Utah has dropped four straight and one of the stronger conferences in the land is all of the sudden cutting it close on filling spots in all seven bowl affiliations. Still, three teams in the top 10 of all major rankings is more than anyone below can say.

Big Ten
(previous: T-4)
Top 25 Teams: 2 (both polls)
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 26-14
Nonconference record (Total): 34-14
Cumulative ATS record: 43-45
Recently: Wisconsin's third straight win -- and sixth overall -- locks up a Big Ten title game appearance and is another step forward for a team that appeared to be heading in the wrong direction fast. The Badgers could hold a solid ranking in both polls -- currently No. 25 in Coaches only -- by the end of the season, and along with the slew of Legends contenders make up a decent Big Ten core. Hard to get a good read on this conference, I'm too distracted by all the fun rivalry trophies.

Big East
(previous: T-4)
Top 25 Teams: 2 (both polls)
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 14-10
Nonconference record (Total): 22-11
Cumulative ATS record:25-29-1
Recently: Cincinnati was vulnerable for an upset, after only really being tested by PIttsburgh and Virginia Tech. Toledo is a dangerous team on the rise (more on that later), and Cincinnati caught the wrong end of a tough MAC battle. Now we see how they bounce back in the Keg of Nails on Friday. With three of eight teams still winless in conference play, the league could use another serious contender besides Louisville and Rutgers.

Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 13-14
Nonconference record (Total): 26-14
Cumulative ATS record:40-48-2
Recently: In 2012, the ACC is having the kind of season in which Duke is the Coastal Division leader, controlling its destiny to earn an ACC Championship Game bid. The schedule suggests it will be easier said than done, but it's just that kind of year in the league. Miami and Duke were picked to finish fifth and sixth in the division in July by the media. Their Nov. 24 matchup in Durham could decide the division winner. Just that kind of year.

(previous: 7)
Top 25 Teams: 1 (both polls)
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 13-25
Nonconference record (Total): 23-26
Cumulative ATS Record: 49-48
Recently: Score another one for the MAC. Toledo took down undefeated Cincinnati and, in addition to knocking off a top-20 team, sent a strong message to rest of the conference. The MAC now has four teams bowl eligible -- second-most behind the SEC. The division races in the East -- etween Kent State and Ohio -- and the West -- Northern Illinois and Toledo -- will make for an entertaining home stretch that promises plenty of MACtion.

Mountain West
(previous: 8)
Top 25 Teams: 1 (both polls)
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 11-20
Nonconference record (Total): 17-23
Cumulative ATS Record: 39-35
Recently: Credit San Diego State for putting together a furious fourth-quarter charge to knock off Nevada 39-38 in overtime on the road. The Wolf Pack were surging behind Cody Fajardo and Stephon Jefferson, but the Aztecs scored a victory against the MW newcomers on their way out the door. San Diego State is on the uptick itself, but Nevada took a costly loss that hurts its conference title chances and the league's stock.

Top 25 Teams: AP: 1, Coaches: 0
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 12-13
Nonconference record (Total): 19-14
Cumulative ATS Record: 30-18
Recently: It is a slow weekend in the WAC when everyone is on conference play. Utah State continues to hammer opponents, San Jose State's offense is rolling, and -- wait, you have got to be kidding. Louisiana Tech put up how many yards? 839? The halftime score was 56-21? Bryan Fischer joked on Fisch and Chips this week that every yard was a potential dollar on Sonny Dykes' next contract.

Sun Belt
(previous: 10)
Top 25 Teams: 0
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 10-19
Nonconference record (Total): 16-20
Cumulative ATS record: 37-26
Recently: It was a thrilling weekend of Sun Belt action, beginning with North Texas' 30-23 win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday. Two games on Saturday went to overtime, including Louisiana-Monroe's 43-42 win over Western Kentucky with a two-point conversion on its first extra-time score. The teams at the top of the league are well-coached and playing some good exciting football right now, making the next few weeks very attractive for casual viewing.

Top 25 Teams: 0
Nonconference record (vs. FBS): 7-33
Nonconference record (Total): 12-34
Cumulative ATS Record: 40-46-2
Recently: You know what is really sad in Conference USA? Southern Miss went to 10 straight bowl games -- a school record -- from 2002-11 and is already ineligible for the postseason by late October. With its 0-7 record, it will also be the end a streak of 18 consecutive winning seasons. Southern Miss is having a losing season, Tulsa almost lost to Rice, OUR PETS' HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!
