The 110th meeting between Michigan and Ohio State will take place November 29 (Michigan leads the series, 58-45-6, but has lost 10 of the last 12). As the two programs progress toward rivalry week, we'll take a weekly look at current trends, and the current state of hostilities, between the Wolverines and Buckeyes.
Days until game: 88
Michigan last week: The Wolverines excorcised some demons, beating up on Appalachian State 52-14 as Devin Gardner hooked up with Devin Funchess for three touchdowns and both Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith rushed for over 100 yards. It didn't erase the memory of that 2007 loss for Michigan, but it damn sure felt good.
Ohio State last week: The Buckeyes sputtered a bit out of the gate against Navy, trailing at halftime 7-6, but they got their act together in the second half to win 34-17. The big question mark heading into the game was quarterback J.T. Barrett, and he handled himself rather well, completing 12 of his 15 passes for 226 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also led the Buckeyes with 50 rushing yards.
2014 Michigan-Ohio State power index: 1. Ohio State 2. Michigan
Michigan this week: at No. 16 Notre Dame, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. (Notre Dame -4.5)
Ohio State this week: vs. Virginia Tech, Saturday, 8 p.m. (Ohio State -11)
Michigan storyline: This will be the last time that Michigan meets Notre Dame, at least for the forseeable future, as Notre Dame opted out of its contract with the school three years ago. Michigan and Brady Hoke have gone out of their way to make sure you know that it was Notre Dame backing out of the series, and not the other way around too, with a few chicken references being thrown around from time to time. If it is the last meeting, Michigan is going to want to make sure it goes out the winner.
Ohio State storyline: Struggling at a neutral site for a half against Navy wasn't a big deal, as the Buckeyes were able to overcome the early deficit, and playing an option team like Navy is always a pain in the butt. This week will be a bit tougher, though, as Virginia Tech had one of the best defenses in the country last season and is coming off an easy 34-9 tuneup against William & Mary. The Hokies defense will be a much tougher puzzle for J.T. Barrett to solve, and if he struggles like so many freshmen before him, it could be a bad day for Ohio State.
Moment in hatestory: November 22, 1986
Before Michigan and Ohio State did battle in 1986, Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh (not sure what happened to him) guaranteed that the Wolverines would beat the Buckeyes in Columbus. Early on it looked as though Harbaugh would eat his words, as the Buckeyes took a 14-3 lead. Running back Jamie Morris would bail his quarterback out, though, as he rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns and Michigan would win 26-24 when Ohio State's Matt Frantz missed a late 45-yard field goal. The win would send the Wolverines to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl, and it was also Bo Schembechler's 166th career win at Michigan, making him the winningest coach in the school's history.
