Down goes Fresno! Down goes Fresno!
With apologies to Howard Cosell, down goes Fresno, and the path is clear for Northern Illinois to make the BCS
Fresno State's BCS hopes went down in flames Friday with a 62-52 loss at San Jose State. That has cleared the way for Northern Illinois to make a repeat appearance in the BCS. The Huskies just need to beat Bowling Green in the MACtion title game next week to secure a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. The Falcons beat Buffalo on Friday to win the East division.
The Spartans needed the win to become bowl eligible, but ironically, they may still get left out of the bowls, and they did so while costing their league millions of dollars. Fresno State now will take one of the Mountain West's bowl spots, which means that unless Colorado State loses to Air Force on Saturday, the league will have one more eligible team than bowl openings. San Jose State is likely to be the team left out, and they aren't going to be too attractive to another bowl either because of a very small fan base.
So, that may have been a Pyrrhic victory for San Jose State and the Mountain West.
