Duke CB Hud Mellencamp, son of John, facing felony battery charges
Hud Mellencamp, son of John Mellencamp, faces charges of felony battery after allegedly assaulting a 19-year-old man in July.
Duke cornerback Hud Mellencamp, the son of singer John Mellencamp, faces felony battery charges from a July incident in Indiana, according to an affidavit filed earlier this week.
Mellencamp and his younger brother, Speck, are two of three men being charged with felony battery after police say they punched and kicked a 19-year-old man on his front porch. The victim suffered facial fractures and cuts that required stitches.
Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller told the Herald Times that "arrangements are being made for the Mellencamps to turn themselves over to police."
"Currently, we are giving him the opportunity to return to Indiana to address his legal issues," Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe said. "We will refrain from any further comment until more information becomes available."
According to the affidavit, Hud and Speck told police the fight was in a response to Speck getting hit in the face during a party at the house earlier that night. The Mellencamps returned to the house later to find the victim sitting on the porch, according to authorities Speck struck without warning.
Mellencamp walked on to the Duke football team in 2012 with no high school playing experience. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound defensive back was an accomplished boxer while being home-schooled in Indiana. He did not see game action last season, but his school bio states that Mellencamp "could contribute on special teams this fall."
Hud told authorities that he was present during the assault, but uninvolved in the beating. However, two eye witnesses and all three of the victims roommates -- who intervened to stop the assault -- contradicted Mellencamp's claim.
Duke is scheduled to hold their annual fan day, "Meet the Blue Devils," on Saturday in Pascal Field House.
