Ex-UGA safety Tray Matthews tweets he's transferring to Auburn
Dismissed Georgia safety Tray Matthews tweeted Saturday that he will transfer to the Bulldogs' hated rivals at Auburn.
Georgia fans were already less-than-thrilled with Tray Matthews, the former Bulldog who'd showed great promise as a true freshman safety before being dismissed earlier this month for various off-field issues -- including his March arrest on charges he and three teammates cashed their university stipend checks twice.
Safe to say they're going to be even less thrilled now.
Matthews tweeted Saturday that he will transfer to the Bulldogs' hated rivals at Auburn, presumably sitting out the mandated transfer season before becoming eligible in 2015:
I'm truly blessed for this opportunity and second chance that God and Coach Gus has blessed me with. I'm excited and ready to Excel at AU— TriggaTray28 (@Trigga_Tray28) June 14, 2014
Ready to be an Auburn Man. I'm very humbled by all that has happened . Truly blessed. Au family and fans we in this together. WDE!! #Blessed— TriggaTray28 (@Trigga_Tray28) June 14, 2014
Auburn has not yet made an announcement or comment of any kind. Matthews told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Richt dismissed him on the heels of his involvement in a classroom disturbance -- though he insisted he did not disrespect the professor.
A top-100 overall recruit in the class of 2013, Matthews enrolled early in Athens, created substanial buzz in spring practice and went on to start six games as a Bulldog, making 36 tackles and grabbing one interception.
But in a bit of irony that's going to haunt him for as long as stays with the Tigers, Matthews might best be remembered for being one of the two Bulldog defensive backs -- along with Josh Harvey-Clemons, now at Louisville -- responsible for the deflected ball on Nick Marshall's "Prayer at Jordan-Hare."
Nick Marshall, of course, was the quarterback on that play, and is also a former Georgia defensive back. Assuming Matthews' transfer is completed, rest assured that Mark Richt and Gus Malzahn will have plenty to talk about at their next meeting.
