Four UGA football players arrested on theft charges
Safety Tray Matthews was one of four Georgia football players arrested on charges of theft by deception on Monday night.
Free safety Tray Matthews, wide receiver Uriah LeMay, defensive lineman John Taylor and defensive end James DeLoach were all charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor theft (less than $500). Three of the players (Matthews, Taylor and DeLoach) are accused of double-cashing their stipend checks while LeMay is charged with depositing his roommates' stipend check.
"Matthews, DeLoach and Taylor would basically take that check and deposit it through a mobile banking app. And then within a short period of time would go to a local convenience store and cash the checks. So they basically would cash the check twice," UGA chief of police Jimmy Williamson told the Macon Telegraph.
UGA's finance department discovered the issue, once the athletic department and UGA police were informed it only took "a few days" to resolve the issue:
Georgia head coach Mark Richt released a statement Tuesday morning.
"I'm aware of the situation and it will be handled in an appropriate way."
The Bulldogs are scheduled to start 2014 spring practice on Tuesday.
