Gunner Kiel also eyeing Ole Miss, Mississippi State, others for transfer
Former Notre Dame quarterback Gunner Kiel has been contacted by Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Kansas State and has visited Cincinnati.
Former Notre Dame quarterback Gunner Kiel visited Cincinnati over the weekend, but the former five-star revealed Tuesday that he has a long list of possible transfer locations.
Kiel told ESPN.com that, in addition to Cincinnati, the quarterback has been contacted by Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Kansas State. Kiel also indicated that Tennessee, Ball State, Northern Illinois and Miami (Ohio) are also options. However in the time since Kiel spoke to ESPN.com, CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman has learned that the Vols are not pursuing the ex-Notre Dame quarterback.
"The biggest factor for me now going through it all again is having a great relationship with my position coach," Kiel said.
The 2011 Indiana Mr. Football Award winner committed to Indiana initially before changing his mind to LSU during his senior season. Kiel finished high school early and then, just days before the deadline to enroll in classes, changed his mind again and enrolled at Notre Dame.
Kiel plans to make a transfer decision at the end of spring football. He will then have to sit out the 2013 regular season before getting a chance to compete in 2014.
"This is something you don't want to do," Kiel said of the transfer process. "But at the same time, I'm doing what's in my best interest and to get on the field."
The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the Bearcats feel as though they have a good chance to land the 6-foot-4, 210-pound transfer prospect. Kiel told ESPN.com that his visit to Cincinnati was "a lot of fun." New head coach Tommy Tuberville will have to decide between Brendon Kay and Munchie Legaux for the quarterbacking duties this fall, but Kiel should have a fair chance to compete after both players move on from the program this year.
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told reporters that Kiel would have been given a chance to compete against incumbent starter Everett Golson this spring. However, Golson's development during the Fighting Irish's undefeated regular season suggest that the redshirt sophomore might be under center for a while in South Bend.
