Duke @ Virginia Tech
Current Records: Duke 3-6; Virginia Tech 4-5
What to Know
After two games on the road, the Virginia Tech Hokies are heading back home. Virginia Tech and the Duke Blue Devils will face off in an ACC battle at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
The Hokies came up short against the Boston College Eagles last week, falling 17-3. One thing holding Virginia Tech back was the mediocre play of QB Knox Kadum, who did not have his best game: he passed for only 73 yards on 16 attempts.
Meanwhile, the oddsmakers predicted a rough game for Duke last week, and boy were they were right. They have to be aching after a bruising 54-29 defeat to the Pittsburgh Panthers. Duke was down 44-22 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. No one had a standout game offensively for Duke, but they got scores from a handful of players including RB Mataeo Durant, WR Jalon Calhoun, and QB Gunnar Holmberg.
The Hokies are the favorite in this one, with an expected 11.5-point margin of victory. But bettors beware: they are 0-4 against the spread when favored.
Virginia Tech is now 4-5 while the Blue Devils sit at 3-6. A couple defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: Virginia Tech is 183rd worst in the nation in rushing yards allowed per game, with 185.7 on average. Duke has experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the matchup with the 234th most passing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 21 on the season. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
