Kent State freshman offensive lineman Tyler Heintz died Tuesday following football conditioning drills.
Kent State confirmed Heintz's death Tuesday evening but did not offer a cause.
"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Tyler's family and friends, as well as Coach [Paul] Haynes and the team, our athletics staff and our student-athletes," a statement from the university read.
According to the Portage County Coroner, via News 5 Cleveland, "Heintz was taken to UH Portage Medical Center where resuscitation efforts were made until 11:34 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the hospital." Paramedics were called to Dix Stadium at a little after 9 a.m. where they found an unresponsive Heintz. An autopsy is expected to be completed on Wednesday, though results may not be known for some time.
Kent State players returned to campus and started summer workouts this week.
Heintz, out of Kenton High School, was a member of the Golden Flashes' 2017 recruiting class. Kenton football's Twitter account posted about Heintz's death earlier Tuesday.
