Looking ahead to Week 2
Should be quiet on the BCS front, but there are still some interesting games.
This is a quiet week on the BCS front for the most part. Michigan will be looking to get back on track against Air Force, and Wisconsin hopes its first week struggles don’t follow the team to Corvallis. LSU faces Washington in Death Valley, but the Tigers' bigger cause for concern is the loss of stud tackle Chris Faulk for the season. Otherwise, it should be business as usual, unless Western Kentucky manages to shock the world. Or Savannah State covers a 70-plus point spread.
Last week, I was 6-2 (3-5 vs spread) and missed on my upset special.
Miami at Kansas State (-7, cover) -- Miami freshman RB Duke Johnson had a big day at BC, but that was BC. Miami’s defense left a lot to be desired and the Wildcats should be able to put up some big numbers.
UCF at Ohio State (-18, cover) -- The Ineligibility Bowl. Braxton Miller lit up Miami of Ohio last week. UCF will be a tougher test, but the Buckeyes should be up to the challenge.
Purdue at Notre Dame (-14, cover) -- Purdue has only beaten the Irish once in the last 38 years in South Bend. Despite that, I was tempted to make this my upset of the week, but Danny Hope decided to go with the extremely average Caleb TerBush at QB. Robert Marve would have at least given the Boilers a puncher’s chance.
Air Force at Michigan (-20.5, cover) -- How will Michigan respond to last week’s blowout loss to Alabama? Air Force isn’t big, but it won’t beat itself. The Wolverines need a confidence boost here.
Florida at Texas A&M (+1) -- The Aggies and new coach Kevin Sumlin make their SEC debut against the Gators. Florida struggled with Bowling Green last week and look unsettled on offense. It will have to play on a higher level this week if it's to win at Kyle Field.
Nebraska (-5, cover) at UCLA -- Tyler Martinez looked like an honest to goodness quarterback last week instead of a guy who could just run. The Jim Mora era at UCLA got off to a good start at Rice last week, but if they can’t slow down Martinez, they are in for a long day.
Georgia (-2) at Missouri -- Mizzou figures to be pretty geeked up for its SEC opener against the Bulldogs. The Tigers will punch Georgia in the mouth early, but the Bulldogs will absorb it and their superior talent will eventually scratch out a win.
UPSET OF THE WEEK: Duke (+15) at Stanford -- Stanford is still adjusting to life without Andrew Luck and had to work hard to get past San Jose St last week. Duke may be catching the Cardinal at a good time in the schedule. As an aside, the Blue Devil’s last road win against a ranked opponent: at Stanford in 1971.
