Maryland starting DE Andre Monroe (knee) out for the year
Maryland starting DE Andre Munroe suffered a knee injury in practice. He will have surgery and miss the entire 2012 season.
The injury woes have not stopped for Maryland since losing starting quarterback C.J. Brown for the year with a knee injury. Randy Edsall met with the media and revealed several more notable injuries on Tuesday, including a knee injury that will sideline starting defensive end Andre Monroe for the entire 2012 season.
According to Edsall, Munroe suffered the injury while running a sprint. C.J. Brown's knee injury was also in a non-contact drill.
"It's amazing because Andre Monroe, he was just running straight ahead," Edsall explained. "He was running a spring and his knee kind of gave out and that was it. So a lot of the issues that we have haven't even been contact-type situations."
Munroe appeared in nine games a freshman in 2011, starting four. He recorded 18 tackles with 7.5 tackles for loss. The sophomore is expected to undergo surgery on Thursday.
Randy Edsall also announced that senior linebacker Kenny Tate will meet with doctors to examine a "left leg injury." Tate missed most of last season with a right knee injury. Additionally, starting defensive end Keith Bowers is probably out two to three weeks, while starting safety Matt Robinson (left arm) will miss the season opener against William & Mary but hopes to be ready for Temple in Week 2.
With the injuries piling up, the hope for Randy Edsall to erase the taste of 2-10 from the mouths of Terps fans is dwindling. Maryland will need a lot of help from unproven reserves to get them into October with a few wins. After William & Mary, the Terps face Temple, Connecticut, and West Virginia in Morgantown before opening conference play with Wake Forest.
