Minnesota could be without MarQueis Gray for up to a month
The Golden Gophers could be missing their starting quarterback, MarQueis Gray, for a month after he was injured against Western Michigan.
Minnesota is off to its first 3-0 start since 2008, but the team's next win could be hard to come by.
Quarterback MarQueis Gray left Minnesota's 28-23 victory over Western Michigan on a cart. While an MRI found no broken bones or structural damage to Gray's left leg, he is believed to have a high ankle sprain.
It's an injury that normally takes two to four weeks to recover from, sometimes longer depending on the severity.
"High ankle sprains are usually a month," coach Jerry Kill told Minneapolis' Star Tribune. "Now, how bad the sprain is, is [the question]. There are different degrees. I don't think anybody knows the degree [yet]. We'll see if he's swelled up, how he moves on Monday."
Kill also said that Gray's leg went numb when he suffered the injury.
Gray's absence will be felt. Through three games this season, Gray has accounted for 632 total yards and seven of Minnesota's 13 touchdowns. If he were to miss a month, that means he would miss games against Syracuse, Iowa and Northwestern.
The good news for Minnesota is backup quarterback Max Shortell played well in relief of Gray on Saturday. He threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns against Western Michigan. The the 6-foot-6, 235-pound sophomore doesn't bring the same kind of threat with his legs that Gray does, so Minnesota might have to adjust its offensive strategy while Gray is out.
