Minnesota, TCU agree to home-and-home series for 2014-15
Minnesota and TCU announced a future home-and-home series. The teams will play in Fort Worth in 2014 and in Minnesota in 2015.
Minnesota and TCU announced the agreement of a home-and-home series for the 2014-15 seasons. According to the official release, the Gophers will visit Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth on Sept. 13, 2014. The Horned Frogs will then return the visit on Sept. 3, 2015 -- the opening weekend of the 2015 season.
The two programs have only met on the football field once, a 9-7 Minnesota win at Memorial Stadium in Minneapolis on Sept. 28, 1974.
The 2014 game fills an empty date on Minnesota's nonconference slate and replaces a previously scheduled home game against FCS foe South Dakota State.
The Big Ten will move to a nine-game conference schedule in 2016, and according to commissioner Jim Delany the league hopes to eliminate the scheduling of FCS opponents at that time. There are some exceptions -- like Iowa's scheduled game against Northern Iowa in 2018 -- that might be made, but Minnesota's move to replace South Dakota State with TCU is exactly what the other Big Ten leaders would like to see with this new scheduling principle.
The emphasis on strength of schedule by the College Football Playoff selection committee is one of the many reasons for these leaguewide scheduling initiatives. As schools look to solidify future schedules, it is expected we will see more of these meetings between power conference teams -- even when there might be little-to-no history between the programs.
