Minnesota's depth issues at wide receiver got even worse this week, when freshman Andre McDonald was suspended for the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas as a result of a "violation of team policy."
"Just a violation of team policy and he didn't make the trip, but that decision was made, not today or anything," Kill told 1500 ESPN Twin Cities after practice Monday.
The Golden Gophers are heavy underdogs to Texas Tech in the Houston-based bowl game on Dec. 28 in Reliant Stadium. While McDonald is not a starter or regular contributor to the offense, Jerry Kill and the Gophers' staff could have benefited from any extra boost to an offense that ranked 10th among Big Ten teams in total offense with just 317.5 yards per game. Texas Tech, on the other hand, has one of the best offensive units in the country, averaging over 500 yards per game. If this game turns into a shootout, the Golden Gophers may find themselves ill equipped for the battle.
McDonald missed time this season with various health issues, but managed to record 10 catches for 121 yards in eight games of action. The true freshman saw his role expand after the mid-season transfer of leading receiver A.J. Barker. Over half of McDonald's receiving yards came in the Golden Gopher's final two games of the season, and with Marqueis Gray moving back to quarterback for the bowl game there could have been more opportunities for McDonald to continue building on that momentum -- particularly after the early season health issues.
