Northern Michigan offensive lineman Anthony Herbert, 20, was unable to be resuscitated Tuesday after being found unresponsive in his dorm room.
Herbert, who had participated in a morning workout with the football team, reportedly ate breakfast before returning to his room. Emergency medical technicians were called shortly after he returned and suffered a "medical emergency," according to MLive.com.
"In my brief time with Anthony, I could tell that he was a great young man," said coach Kyle Nystrom in a statement released by the school. "He was well-respected by his coaches and teammates and was a leader on the offensive line. We are devastated by this tragedy, and we are keeping his family in our prayers."
Herbert started all 11 games as a redshirt freshman last season for Division II Northern Michigan and was a member of the All-GLIAC academic team. He was remembered by his friends and teammates on social media following his death.
