Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has started big games at Texas Tech and Oklahoma, played in a College Football Playoff game and won a Big 12 title. But when discussing some memories from the Sooners' 2015 campaign, Mayfield pointed to Neyland Stadium as the site of his most memorable college football game experience.
Mayfield sat down for a Q&A with Athlon Sports for the magazine's 2016 preview, discussing everything from the transfer process to how much he misses baseball. When asked what stadium -- other than Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium -- provided the best experience, Mayfield took it back to Knoxville and the site of OU's 31-24 double-overtime win.
"You can't beat the Cotton Bowl. There's nothing like that," Mayfield said, via Athlon. "But last year when we went to play Tennessee in Neyland Stadium, that was probably the best game experience I've had and probably will ever have. That's a different type of loud. I can't even describe it. It was unbelievable."
Now, Tennessee fans would likely take more pride in that statement if the Vols had been able to hold on for the win and Mayfield's experience was likely skewed by the game's result as well. Neyland Stadium's size and the passion of the Vols' fans did contribute to Oklahoma-Tennessee being one of the best games of 2015, even if the home fans wishes the game ended differently.
