Oklahoma's Samaje Perine sets new FBS rushing record with 427 yards

Melvin Gordon's new FBS single-game rushing record lasted all of seven days.

Only a week after Gordon broke LaDainian Tomlinson's 15-year-old mark with 408 rushing yards against Nebraska, Oklahoma freshman Samaje Perine rushed for 427 yards against Kansas, setting the new FBS record.

NCAA Most Rushing Yards Game (FBS)
Yards Player, School Opponent (Year)
427 Samaje Perine, Oklahoma Kansas (2014)
408 Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin Nebraska (2014)
406 Ladainian Tomlinson, TCU UTEP (1999)
396 Tony Sands, Kansas Missouri (1991)
386 Marshall Faulk, S.D. State Pacific (1991)
378 Troy Davis, Iowa State Missouri (1996)

Perine rushed 34 times for a 12.6 per-carry average, scoring five touchdowns on rushes of 49, 33, 34, 66 and 27 yards. He left the game immediately after setting the record with the Sooners up 44-7 on the Jayhawks, the eventual final score.

''It's still surreal,'' Perine said, per the Associated Press. ''I just looked at it as doing what I had to do to help my team. I'm not really feeling special in any type of way.''

Bob Stoops said he had no qualms about leaving Perine in to start the fourth quarter and secure the record even with the game essentially decided.

''The guy is just so exceptional in everything that he does,'' Stoops said. ''We were thinking about resting him, and then someone said he only needs 35 more yards, and you know, that's just too close not to do it, and there's too much time left in the game.''

Tomlinson rushed for 406 yards for TCU against UTEP in 1999 and saw his mark stand up until last Saturday, when Gordon hit 408 yards on 25 carries, all by the end of the third quarter.

A four-star, top-250 prospect in the class of 2014 out of Pflugerville, Texas, Perine has now rushed for 1,428 yards in his true freshman season. His 19 rushing touchdowns represent the new record for an Oklahoma freshman, breaking the previous mark held by Adrian Peterson.

By the end of the third quarter, Perine had already tied Iowa State's Troy Davis for the most single-game rushing yards ever by a Big 12 running back with 378. He set the record on this 41-yard carry early in the fourth quarter:
