Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin will miss Monday night's season opener against Louisville after testing positive for COVID, he announced on Saturday.
Kiffin has been vocal about his support of getting vaccinated and his program's 100% vaccination rate among the coaching staff and players. He reiterated that support in identifying his diagnosis as a breakthrough case in his statement on Saturday. Additionally, Kiffin announced that at this time no other coaches or players are expected to miss the game as a result of this positive test.
"I am disappointed to confirm that I have developed a break-through case of Covid and will not accompany our team to Atlanta," Kiffin wrote. "I am grateful to be vaccinated and experiencing only mild symptoms. So much so, I debated over being tested, but I'm relieved that I did. I'm proud of our program's commitment to vaccination, and as a result, there are currently no other cases to report or team members expected to miss the game. We will continue to monitor our team closely and take responsible measures if any symptoms arise."
Ole Miss and Louisville play Monday night in Atlanta in the final game of Week 1. The Rebels currently sit as a 10-point favorite in the contest. At the time of Kiffin's announcement, per ESPN, Ole Miss had not yet decided who would handle the interim head coach duties for the game.
