Penn State kicker Anthony Fera transferring to Texas
Penn State kicker and punter Anthony Fera will reportedly transfer to Texas. He will be immediately eligible for the 2012 season.
The exodus of all-conference Penn State players continues, with kicker/punter Anthony Fera reportedly transferring to Texas.
A Penn State spokesman said Thursday that Fera is no longer on the Nittany Lions' roster, and ESPN.com's Joe Schad - among several other outlets - is reporting the All-Big Ten Second Team punter will join the Longhorns.
Fera handled the place-kicking and punting duties for Penn State in 2011, and was semifinalist for both the Lou Groza and Ray Guy Awards. Fera converted on 14 of his 17 field goal attempts (82.4 percent) and his 41.95 yard punting average was second-best in the Big Ten.
Texas used now-graduated kicker Justin Tucker for place-kicking and punting duties in 2011, so it is likely that Fera will be able to compete for playing time immediately. The current specialists on the roster include freshmen Nick Jordan and Ben Pruitt, and sophomore Will Russ.
Fera is the eighth player, and second returning starter, to leave Penn State in the wake of NCAA sanctions that allow student-athletes to transfer and be immediately eligible at their new school. Running back Silas Redd was the first notable departure, announcing on Tuesday his intended transfer to Southern California .
