Times are tough for UMass football, but at least they can have some fun at Boston College's expense before the teams' season opener.
Since moving up a class to the FBS in 2012, UMass has gone 2-22, and isn't expected to fare dramatically better in Mark Whipple's first season in 2014. (As it was in 2013, the Minutemen's win total has been set at 1.5 wins by offshore sportsbook 5Dimes. At least it's the over that's juiced this time!)
So no, UMass isn't likely to enjoy an on-field victory when it hosts Boston-area "rival" Boston College at Gillette Stadium Saturday -- the Eagles are 17-point favorites, and that frankly feels generous to the Minutemen -- but at least it has this. Via Only In Boston, yes, that's the Doug Flutie statue at Chestnut Hill clothed in a UMass jersey behind a UMass placard:
Take THAT, Eagles! The perpetrator is apparently unidentified, but he or she can take some pleasure in offering his or her fellow UMass supporters a much-needed grin as another long season approaches.
