QB Wes Lunt to transfer from Oklahoma State
Wes Lunt is leaving after a freshman season that saw him start five games for the Cowboys.
"We appreciate Wes and we thank him for everything he has done," Gundy said. "He's leaving on good terms and is making this decision based on what he thinks is best for his future."
The four-star recruit from the class of 2012 enrolled at OSU early and was named the starting quarterback for the Cowboys following 2012 spring practice. He went on to become the first true freshman signal caller to start a season opener at the school since at least 1950.
He went 11 for 11 for 129 yards in his debut against Savannah State, but a variety of injuries limited Lunt to just five total starts during his freshman year. He wound up throwing for 1,108 yards, with six touchdown passes and seven interceptions, while sharing time with fellow frosh J.W. Walsh and junior Clint Chelf.
Lunt's competition with Walsh and Chelf carried over into 2013 spring ball, with Chelf -- who started the final six games of last season -- retaining the advantage heading into the fall.
But there's an old saying: If you have two quarterbacks, you don't have a quarterback. Well, with three potential starters at quarterback, the Cowboys really didn't have one.
So it's no surprise one would jump ship. Lunt, with four years to get three on his eligibility clock, will have plenty of time to make his mark at another (as yet undetermined) school.
As for the Cowboys, they've still got two quarterbacks to choose from, but it appears Chelf might be the guy for now. However, Walsh's combination of accuracy (67 percent) and mobility (290 rush yards, seven scores) will be hard to keep off the field.
This is a quarterback situation that probably won't be fully resolved until well into fall camp.
