Quick Hits: USC 49, Hawaii 10
Marqise Lee caught 10 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown (while adding another score on a 100-yard kickoff return) and USC opened its season with an easy 49-10 romp over Hawaii.
USC WON: Heisman Trophy front runner Matt Barkley threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns and Marqise Lee caught 10 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown (while adding another score on a 100-yard kickoff return) and USC opened its season with an easy 49-10 romp over Hawaii. A stingy Trojan defense led by linebacker Hayes Pullard held the Warriors to 264 total yards and just 56 yards on the ground. Hawaii did hold USC to just 82 yards rushing, but couldn't contain the relentless Trojan air attack.
WHY USC WON: The Trojans just had too much talent for the Warriors. USC didn't even bother much with its run game, throwing 30 times in the first half alone. Why run when you have the likes of Lee and All-American Robert Woods to catch Barkley's passes?
WHEN USC WON: Barkley hit Lee for a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the way. Hawaii was never a threat to USC at any point.
WHAT USC WON: An injury-free win. USC only has 75 players on roster due to NCAA sanctions. Getting through this game without any major injuries was a bright side for a team that can't afford any due to lack of overall depth.
WHAT HAWAII LOST: Hawaii couldn't take full advantage of some of the soft spots in the USC secondary. Quarterback Sean Schroeder was 24 of 39 for 208 yards, but he didn't complete a pass for longer than 18 yards. He also had a costly interception that Pullard returned for a score.
