With several high-profile SEC coaching positions open, it figured that Arkansas -- still looking for a permanent replacement for Bobby Petrino -- would be ready to break the bank on its next head coach. According to local reports, they have made a "serious offer" to LSU coach Les Miles.
The Times-Picayune is reporting that Arkansas has made Miles an offer for five years and $27.5 million, forcing a meeting between LSU athletic director Joe Alleva and the coach's agent.
LSU declined to comment on that report, and Les Miles is currently out of town recruiting.
The reported offer first made waves courtesy of Sports by Brooks' Twitter account, and LSU SID Michael Bonnette told The Times-Picayune it had been brought to Miles' attention. According to Bonnette, Miles "didn't have anything to say."
Les' current contract at LSU pays $3.751 million annually with incentives for academics and postseason performance. His deal was last modified August 2011.
Arkansas likely has been gathering the resources to make a serious offer to their next head coach, but even if -- and that's a big if -- these figures are correct; that does not necessarily mean that Miles will accept the offer. He is currently the school's second-winningest coach with an 85-20 record, winning two SEC titles and the 2007 BCS National Championship.
One suggestion is that most of this has sprung out of speculation that Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long, a former football staffer at Michigan, might be trying to lure his former colleague from Ann Arbor.
