Report: Army 'expected' to hire Georgia Southern's Jeff Monken
Army is reportedly set to announce Georgia Southern's Jeff Monken as the Knights' new head coach.
To the surprise of virtually no one who saw his triple-option offense upset Florida in November, Army is reportedly set to hire Georgia Southern's Jeff Monken as its new head coach.
Local Hudson Valley Times Herald-Record reporter Sal Interdonato tweeted the following Sunday:
Army expected to name Georgia Southern's Jeff Monken next head coach. May not be official until Thursday or Friday, working on contract.— Sal Interdonato (@salinterdonato) December 22, 2013
Interdonato reported that the Knights' other candidates included Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan, Ohio State co-OC Ed Warinner and New York Jets special teams coach Ben Kotwica.
Monken may not be a done deal just yet, though. The Macon (Ga.) Telegraph reported later Sunday that "sources at Army indicated that while Monken is the front-runner, it is not a done deal." Telegraph reporter Mike Brown wrote that the Knights' interview committee was "impressed" by Army alum Kotwica, the last of the four finalists to interview, even if he has no college coaching experience and no head coaching experience on any level.
Monken, on the other hand, has enjoyed no small amount of success coaching the Eagles -- a 38-16 record over four seasons, three FCS semifinal apperances, and the famous win in the Swamp with what was otherwise his least susccessful team of the four. A former assistant under Paul Johnson, Monken also runs the same triple-option attack that has been Army's bread-and-butter for decades; there's a reason his name has been the one most often linked to the job since the day Rich Ellerson was dismissed.
And despite the conflicting reports, it seems likely his name will be linked to -- or rather, inked to -- the front of the Army head coach's office door before much longer.
