Report: Florida suspends 5 for opener, including CB Purifoy
The Gators will be without six players for their opener, including starting corner Louichez Purifoy.
The Gators are heavy, heavy favorites in the Swamp against Toledo in their season opener Saturday. But they might be slightly less heavy with the news that six players have been suspended for violations of team rules, including star corner and part-time wideout Loucheiz Purifoy.
The Gainesville Sun reported late Friday that despite Will Muschamp's midweek comments that linebacker Antonio Morrison would be the only Florida player suspended for Week 1, four more Gators will not see the field against the Rockets. They are Purifoy, defensive tackle Darious Cummings, receiver Latroy Pittman and offensive tackle Quinteze Williams.
Morrison had already been suspended for a pair of offseason arrests. He and Purifoy were returning starters for the Gators, with the other players projected to be backups.
Purifoy's loss could be a big one against the spread-heavy Rockets. Not only did Purifoy start 12 games in 2012 as a sophomore corner, he spent time at receiver in spring camp in order to add an element of explosiveness to a receiving corps that Muschamp has acknowledged needs more production.
UPDATE: The Sun also reported that defensive tackle Jay-nard Bostwick had been suspended. He had not been, leading Muschamp to blast the newspaper and two other media outlets after the game.
