Report: Nebraska LB charged with felony bicycle theft
Sophomore linebacker Josh Banderas was arrested Monday and charged with stealing seven bicycles off a Lincoln bike rack.
A promising sophomore linebacker for Nebraska is facing a felony theft charge after police arrested him Monday, alleging he and a second Husker athlete stole $1,699 worth of bicycles.
The Lincoln Journal-Star reported Tuesday that Husker linebacker Josh Banderas and distance runner Lucas Keifer were arrested Monday at approximately 5:10 p.m. According to police, a witness called 911 after seeing two men use a bolt cutter to open the locks on a university bike rack and place seven bicycles in the back of a truck.
Responding officers would later pull over the truck, university police said, with Keifer driving and Banderas as the passenger. The bikes and bolt cutter were recovered from the truck and Banderas and Keifer were transported to jail on the suspicion of "unlawful taking" of property valued between $500 and $1,500 and possession of burglar's tools. Prosecutors formally charged them Tuesday.
Per a police official speaking to the Associated Press, Banderas and Keifer were cooperative, with one admitting to officers they had stolen the bikes and calling the decision "bone-headed."
Per the Journal-Star, Banderas and Keifer were released on $3,500 bond. A Nebraska spokesman told the paper it was aware of the incident but would not comment further.
Banderas started four games for the Huskers as a freshman in 2013, making 28 tackles. Both he and Keifer attended Lincoln Southwest High School.
