Report: UCLA DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa to miss season (hip)
UCLA senior defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa had hip surgery on Tuesday, ending his 2013 season.
The 6-foot-3, 270-pound senior did not participate in UCLA's recent spring practices due to offseason surgery on his left hip.
Odighizuwa, a former five-star recruit, showed flashes of brilliance for the Bruins last season as an oft-used reserve, collecting 44 tackles, including six for losses and 3.5 sacks. Before being derailed by his injuries, he appeared to be a more-than-able replacement for recently-departed first-round pick Datone Jones.
Instead, Odighizuwa will redshirt this fall and come back for his senior season in 2014.
Without Odighizuwa, the Bruins may have to turn to some unproven players to come through at that end spot, including junior Brandon Willis and freshmen Sam Tai and Kylie Fitts. Another option is senior outside linebacker Keenan Graham, who played end before UCLA switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defensive alignment in 2012.
