Report: Wisconsin accused Urban Meyer of illegal recruiting practices
Sporting News says Ohio State used NFL players to call recruits and "bumped" into players during recruiting dead period
In particular, the way Ohio State went about getting offensive lineman Kyle Dodson from flipping his commitment from Wisconsin to Ohio State.
While most of the focus of the story was on the supposed "gentlemen's agreement" between Big Ten coaches, it turns out there were other factors that angered Bielema. In a Sporting News story by Matt Hayes chronicling Meyer's time at Florida, Hayes also gave some more background on the tactics Wisconsin accused Meyer of using to flip Dodson's commitment.
According to sources, Wisconsin accused Meyer and his staff of using former Ohio State NFL players to call high school recruits. Wisconsin also accused Meyer and his staff of bumping into offensive lineman Kyle Dodson, who was committed to the Badgers but eventually flipped and signed with the Buckeyes. The practice of “bumping” occurs when coaches accidentally “bump” into players during recruiting dead periods. Now, there's a big difference between accusing a school of using these tactics and actually having proof that it took place. Meyer told the Sporting News that when he heard of the accusations he asked the coaches involved and they denied any wrongdoing.
Both the alleged phone calls and bumping are NCAA violations.
When asked about the specific charges, Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema declined comment, but told Sporting News a day after National Signing Day that, “I wasn’t upset with Urban because of a gentlemen’s agreement. It was something else that I don’t want to get into. I told him what I knew, and he said he would take care of it and he did.”
Meyer also said that Ohio State hasn't self-reported any of these violations "because they're not true." Meyer also said there are no issues with him and the NCAA.
The only thing we know for sure at this point is that Wisconsin and Ohio State will meet in Madison on November 17, and that it's a game you won't want to miss.
