The number of bad headlines at Baylor, even since first-year coach Matt Rhule took over, is approaching never-ending status.

KWTX reports that DeMarkco Butler, the Bears’ associate director for football operations, has been fired for sending inappropriate text messages to a teenager. Baylor would not confirm the reason for Butler’s dismissal to the outlet; however, it would appear as though the teenager is considered an adult under a Texas statute.

“DeMarkco Butler is no longer employed by Baylor University,” a statement to KWTX read. “As a personnel matter, we have no further comment.”

Butler, hired last month, is the second football staffer to be let go during Rhule’s short time in Waco, Texas. In February, Brandon Washington, the team’s assistant strength coach, was dismissed for soliciting a prostitute

All of this, of course, comes after Baylor became the centerpiece for a horrific sexual assault scandal that ended up costing former coach Art Briles his job and led to the eventual departures of president Ken Starr and athletic director Ian McCaw. Though Baylor is at least firing assistants for their alleged actions now, these are still bad optics for a program criticized for a culture problem.

Also on Monday, former Baylor tight end Tre’Von Armstead was arrested in Las Vegas on charges of domestic battery, resisting arrest and breaking/tampering with a vehicle. According to a TMZ report, Armstead kicked out the back window of a police car after his arrest.

Armstead was accused of participating in a gang rape in 2013 -- one of 52 alleged acts of rape committed by Baylor players from 2011-14 -- and was one of the first names connected to what would become large-scale scandal. He was later dismissed from the team in 2015 for “violating team rules.”
