San Jose State has hired Ron Caragher as its new head coach, the school announced on Monday via press release.

Caragher has spent the last six seasons as the head coach at the University of San Diego. He'll replace Mike MacIntyre, who left to take over at Colorado a week ago.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to lead the San Jose State football program. Having grown up in the San Jose area, I understand the rich tradition of Spartan football -- it's lineage of great coaches, terrific teams and outstanding players," Caragher said in the school's press release.

Caragher succeeded Jim Harbaugh at San Diego and was 44-22 in his time there. Before San Diego, he was the running backs coach at Kentucky. He also spent seven seasons as a receivers coach at UCLA, where he played  (he backed up Troy Aikman in 1987-88).

One thing is for sure: Caragher will have a tough act to follow in MacIntyre, who led the Spartans to their best record since 1987.

Defensive coordinator Kent Baer will remain the interim head coach through SJSU's Dec. 27 game against Bowling Green in the Military Bowl in Washington, D.C.
