Rutgers' first season as a member of the Big Ten will open with a 2014 trip to Seattle to play Washington State, the schools announced on Wednesday.

The home-and-home series will kick off Aug. 29, 2014 at CenturyLink Field, the home of the Seattle Seahawks. Unless an odd sequence of events leads to the two teams playing in a bowl game -- there are no 2013 bowls with a Pac-12/American Athletic Conference matchup, it will be the first meeting between Rutgers and Washington State on the football field.

The Cougars will make a return visit to Piscataway, N.J., on Sept. 12, 2015, the second week of the season.

Rutgers slid into spots on Washington State's non-conference schedule that were once occupied by future Big Ten partner Wisconsin. On Wednesday, the Badgers announced that their home-and-home series against the Cougars had been rescheduled to 2022-23.

All of this shuffling is just another part of the complicated scheduling puzzle for school administrators. The College Football Playoff will put an emphasis on strength of schedule, so there is an emphasis on scheduling non-conference opponents from other power conferences. At the same time, an AD/President wants to put their team in the best position to succeed. The pieces don't always fit, and that's why games get kicked back to 2022-23.
