Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon entered a plea deal, agreeing to a one-year deferred sentence, 100 hours of community service and mandatory counseling, instead of a trial that was set to begin in January 2015.

Mixon was charged with one misdemeanor count of an act resulting in gross injury for his role in an altercation with another OU student in July. According to the affidavit of probable cause, the freshman running back and Amelia Rae Molitor, 20, were engaged in a verbal and physical altercation at Pickelman's Gourmet Cafe in Norman.

Mixon was suspended for the entire 2014 season as a result of the incident. He has been allowed to remain a student at OU and receive financial aid thanks to meeting "appropriate conditions" set by athletic director Joe Castiglione and coach Bob Stoops.

According to Mixon's attorney, Kevin Finlay, the former five-star prospect plans to remain at Oklahoma and rejoin his Sooner teammates in the future.

“Today, Joe has made the decision that entering an Alford Plea to the misdemeanor and accepting the short period of probation was the best course of action at this point in his life," Finlay's statement read.

"Joe does not want to be a further distraction to his family, friends, teammates, and the University of Oklahoma. Joe would like to apologize to everyone affected by this unfortunate chain of events. Joe looks forward to continuing towards his goal of becoming a successful student and athlete at the University of Oklahoma.”

Oklahoma will be back on the field on Saturday at Iowa State after a week off. The Sooners are ranked No. 18 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
