Craig Howard, who coached Tim Tebow at Nease High School before leading Southern Oregon to the NAIA national championship, passed away last week at the age of 64.

The school released the news in a statement, saying that Howard died at home Thursday night after a day of recruiting.

Howard coached Tebow in Jacksonville, Florida, where they won the state championship in 2005. Tebow took to Twitter to express his sorrow for the passing of his mentor.

"Heartbreaking to lose my coach Craig Howard today," Tebow wrote. "More than a coach, he was a mentor & father figure. He changed my life & I will miss him!"

Howard coached high school football in Florida from 2003-10 before returning to his home state in 2011 to coach at Southern Oregon. He led the team to a 2014 NAIA title and back to the championship game in 2015.
