Tony Franklin to be Cal's offensive coordinator
According to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, Cal has hired Tony Franklin as offensive coordinator, bringing him in from Louisiana Tech. Barring any last-minute snags, Franklin will be Cal's OC.
New Cal coach Sonny Dykes is hiring Tony Franklin as his offensive coordinator, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.
Last-minute details are being finalized now, but barring an unforseen snag, Franklin will be the Bears' offensive coordinator.
Franklin lasted seven games as Auburn's offensive coordinator in 2008 but resurged with Louisiana Tech, coordinating this year's highest-ranked offense at 51.5 points per game. Dykes, the Bulldogs' coach from 2010-12, stayed faithful to Franklin as the offense failed to take off in their first two years together, ranking 51st in 2011.
Franklin rewarded that patience by guiding an offense that scored 393 points in the first seven games of 2012.
As for the Louisiana Tech job, there's buzz among coaching circles that Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken is in the mix to replace Dykes. Monken fits the Dykes mold as a Big 12 coordinator of a high-powered offense. Dykes once ran Texas Tech's "Air Raid" attack.
